9 Effects Of A Bad or Toxic Skincare Routine On Your Skin

maria de faria superman - clean beauty -anti aging skin

As women, we all wish to enjoy healthy skin with a radiant complexion. However, this is very hard to achieve for many of you. You may find it hard to stick to a routine, or the one you’re following simply doesn’t work its charm. Either way, what you’re currently doing isn’t working, which is why you need to change your ways. Unfortunately, not many women are aware of the severe consequences of bad skincare. For that reason, we’ve decided to touch upon this topic and encourage you to develop a routine you and your skin will enjoy!

The side effects of bad skincare

Not everyone is lucky enough to find the perfect product for their face and body on the first try. For some, it takes lots of trial and error until they figure out what’s most compatible with their unique skin type. Of course, talking to a dermatologist and skiing for their professional help can mean a huge step forward. But no one guarantees the routine they build will address each and every skin concern you’re experiencing.

The important thing here is finding a balance. If you’ve just started out with your skincare routine, you can’t expect to see results immediately. However, you need to at least make sure the regime you follow doesn’t do more harm than good, i.e., to learn how to stay away from toxic skincare.

Surprisingly, many women fail to recognize the consequences of bad skincare. To help you out, we’ve created a list of the most commonly experienced side effects so you’ll know if you’re dealing with one.

1. Intense burning or stinging sensation

If you notice these signs when using a product for the first time, it means you’re experiencing skincare side effects. Whether it’s a lotion, cleanser, or skin mask, no skin product should cause such a feeling- ever! Burning and stinging can be a tell-tale sign you’re allergic to some of the product ingredients. As a result, your skin is activating its defense mechanism to shield itself from its effect.

Even if you’ve used a product for a longer time, you can still experience this sensation now. We know how confusing this might be, as you thought the product was great for your face. The reason for slight stinging and burning can be your naturally sensitive skin. Another cause can be if you’re using the product too frequently or are applying too much of it. Regardless, the best action is to give your skin a little break from using it and try again to test if the symptoms are gone after a certain time.

2. Excessive dryness, flaking, and peeling

Other signs of a toxic skincare routine are experiencing dryness, skin flaking, and even peeling. If you notice these changes around your nose and the corners of your mouth, it might be a sign you’re overusing a certain product. Otherwise, you’re probably allergic to some of the ingredients and need to cease using the product immediately.

3. Rash and blisters

Rash and blisters frequently occur due to bad skincare, most commonly in the areas where you’re using the product. If you develop a rash after only a few applications, you’re probably showing a reaction to some of the preservatives, fragrances, or acrylates used in the product. Talk to your dermatologist to schedule an allergy patch test if you want to take a step further and discover the exact cause. This will reveal what you’re allergic to, so you can ensure you avoid purchasing products containing it.

4. Skin pigmentation

Although this isn’t a common skincare side effect, it can still show in many women. If you notice brown spots, freckles, or sunburn-like patches on your skin, it can mean you’re experiencing a rare allergic reaction. In this case, the most important thing to remember is not to use products to light the skin. Instead, you should visit a dermatologist immediately so they can suggest appropriate treatment.

5. Red and irritated skin

You can experience skin redness and irritation from many toxic skincare ingredients. However, the most common cause for these is acne-treating products, especially if you’re using them to treat adult acne. This is because teen and adult acne aren’t caused by the same bacteria, which makes using conventional acne treatment a wrong choice. Talk to a dermatologist to see whether you’ll need a prescription medication or just a change in the topical treatments you’re using.

6. Acne and breakouts

Seeing more breakouts right after you start using a new product doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. In fact, your skin will need a bit of time to adjust to the new formulation you are using, so be patient. However, if you’re still dealing with acne and breakouts after more than two to three weeks of use, the odds are the product you’re using contains comedogenic agents, so you need to get rid of it.

7. Oiliness

Another sign of using bad skincare products is noticing your skin being more oily. This means that the formulation strips your face from its natural oils, damaging its established protective barrier. Apart from ceasing with these products use, opt for a hyaluronic acid moisturizer to help regain the moisture your skin has lost.

8. Generalized itching

If your whole body itches, it’s possible that you’re having a more severe reaction to a skin product or to something you’ve eaten or inhaled. Stop using all products and introduce them back into your routine one by one to discover which one is causing the side effects.

9. Tightness

Finally, skin tightness is yet another bad skincare reaction, which also means you’re stripping your skin from its natural oils. In fact, you’ll probably first feel your skin being tight and then incredibly oily afterward. To deal with this, start using a gentle and balanced pH cleanser and toner to rebalance your skin and improve its health.
